The Standards of a "Well-Regulated" Militia
The Iowa Militia has chosen to use the United States National Militia Standards as the means of fulfilling the U.S. Constitutions requirement of being "well-regulated militia." The Federal Constitution does allow for the individual state to set standards of regulation, and the state of Iowa has chosen to set general standards of incorporation in the State Constitution under Article VI. The need for a specific manner of training and incorporation beyond the delineated Article has become apparent, in order for a certain level of standardization to be reached. The National Militia Standards serve to fulfill the goal of training all militiamen to basic levels of training, allowing all active members to know and trust the level of training that has been attained by their comrades.
